Ribble Steam Railway

Chain Caul Rd, Preston PR2 2PD, UK – 01772 728800

'The Santa Express' - below par Booked this some time ago for out 5 yr old twins thinking it would be a magical trip for them after seeing many good reviews - however, I cant honestly say that it met up to expectations. We dont have unrealistic expectations, and just ask that what we get is a fair reflection for the cost. The trip was to take around 40 mins, with entertainment on board and a mince pie & port for the adults, and cookie and juice for the little ones. The main event is of course Father Christmas coming around and giving a gift the the children. Once on the train the atmosphere was already good with the children all around in great spirits in anticipation of seeing the man himself, and for the first 10 minutes this continued to be the case, with a 2 man band playing Christmas songs and all singing along. Once they finished, Father Christmas came up, and the smiles of delight on the kids faces were brilliant! So that was the first 15 minutes. After this, there was still plenty of festive feeling, for a few minutes at least, but this is where it lost its spark sadly. The train had been rumbling along at no great pace up to then but then just stopped, we were next to a busy road junction, with a retail outlet over the road.....and there we stayed........minutes past.......and then we started to crawl backwards slowly until.........we stopped.....some more road traffic views........and then crawled forwards again..........then back...then stopped.... so it went on, to the point we thought we had broken down. it should be said that since the departure of the band, there was no music over any speakers, no toots of the stream engines whistle, no.....anything really. Our children and most of those around us had long since lost interest and were frankly bored, running up and down and annoying their parents by saying 'we're bored'! We could have been sat anywhere really doing just this, there was no particular Wow! we're on a steam train feeling, but perhaps I'm affected by the crowded commute to work and back I do each day! We were just static with no great scenery to take in, unless you have a penchant for the contemporary retail park. To be clear - the entertainment when it was there was great, father Christmas was brilliant, and the staff were lovely, this is more a case of stopping and starting and not particularly going anywhere, with kids getting bored - as they do - because there was nothing going on. For a fraction of the cost we could have gone to any number of Christmas parties within a couple of miles of home where there was much more to entertain the little ones. I think this is what was lacking after that first 10-15 minutes. So, would I recommend? Sadly for this particular experience at the price required, I wouldn't go again. I'm sure at other times of the year, they have other rides that may provide more of a steam experience. I love steam trains, as do the kids, but I would want to find one that does actually give a better sense of being on one. I understand this track is around 3 miles long so I'm not expecting The Mallard to pull in for a full run, but I'm not convinced as to how much of those 3 miles we actually saw on the day we went. Sorry I cant be more positive.

Very short train ride out and back with no view to speak of. The museum was good though.

Sunshine Events UK

Fun Towers, 5 Nile Close, Nelson Court Business Park, Preston, Preston Docklands PR2 2XU, UK – 01772 736200

We’ve worked with Sunshine Events for a number of years and it is always a treat for us. They understand our audiences and work with us on developing imaginative ideas that entertain long into the night. Their on-site teams are helpful, industrious and efficient, which is exactly what event managers want. They are a fantastic Lancashire business with a national reach. And as they’ve grown, they’ve never lost sight of the values and qualities that attracted us to them in the first place. They more than live up to their billing as the ‘Fun Experts’.

Sunshine Events are the best at what they do, they are super helpful and can’t do enough for you. Really professional, show up every time and on time. I can not highly recommend them enough, special shout out to Leona as well in the events team. They Really do bring the fun to every event.

Local Parks & Gardens

Avenham and Miller Parks

S Meadow Ln, Preston PR1 8JT, UK – 01772 907737

Avenham Park is stunning and I enjoy walking my puppy there all the time! However; just a WARNING TO ALL PET OWNERS! Today my 5 month old puppy got hit and ran over by a bike on the bottom path along the river. We rushed him to the vets and luckily he was fine bar a swollen paw and a few minor bruises! He was a very lucky puppy! Even though this was an accident I just want to warm all pet owners to be wary as 'some' people on bikes do not stick to the 5 mph speed limit. My puppy is a perfect example of how a terrible accident can happen within just a few seconds. To bike riders in the area: please slow down! No where is that important that you need to put other people or animals in danger! My baby was very lucky today but this may not be the case next time.

Lovely park, poorly run. Boat loads of staff on a week day. Then when its busy not a soul to do any work. Always full of trash at the weekends and bank holidays.

Haslam Park

Bristow Ave, Preston PR2 1JE, UK – 01772 906471

It has a nice park, outdoor gym, nets for football and basketball. It is also a lovely area for a nice walk. Oh and there is a few climbing trees for the kids :-)

Beautiful park, good for dogs and children. A big pond and stream. Woods and foot paths. Access to the canal

Ribbleton Park

1 Heaton Pl, Preston PR1 4TT, UK

It's a lovely green area. Unfortunately, a makeover by the Council I believe, has sterilised the real park feeling, they've cut away all the shrubbery which makes me wonder about the birds that used to nest and the squirrels cover. It's just too antisepticly clean. Not impressed with the vast lottery funding spent this way, personally speaking. However, a quick canvas around some people (not scientific evidence ) and some are in favour of the new look, with solar lighting as they feel safer in the evening times. I remain unconvinced.

I'm not sure what it's like any more, I don't frequent it much. It only picked it up as I live near.

Great website!. Click below to find gardens open during the year around Fulwood or Lancashire. There are photos and lots of detail about the garden.
